The left side houses a pair of Volume buttons and a Mute button. The buttons are backlit, and there’s an extra status LED in between. The back panel is clean save for a recessed area underneath; there you’ll find the permanently attached AC cord, a pair of Ethernet jacks, and an optical input. There are also a pair of holes for wall-mounting the Playbar. As a proper Sonos product, the Playbar supports wireless audio streaming, but it’s more complex than it appears. For the Playbar to deliver wireless streaming, it needs to hook into SonosNet 2.

Now we were suddenly no longer limited to the songs available on Amazon Prime, but we were still only able to use the built-in Amazon Echo speaker. I started a more serious research project to figure out ways to connect external speakers to the Echo. Sadly, the Bluetooth features do not allow for external speakers, but a couple of comments on various forums hinted that there might be a way to bypass the internal speakers and hook up your own.

Connectivity As with Sonos’ other products, the Play: As Sonos has its own proprietary wireless mesh network, it used to be that you’d need to buy a Bridge product to plug into your router or connect another player via Ethernet. Now, Sonos has updated the player’s firmware, so you can simply connect the player to your Wi-Fi network, removing the need for the Bridge entirely and making getting into Sonos cheaper than ever.
